Ship Sleet qualities

The leading steel materials used in steel shipbuilding are Ship Sleet qualities . The entire construction of a ship is made of steel. Steel is the most important raw material of ship manufacturers. All parts of the ships made of steel, from the spine to the outer coating, are made of ship steel.

Ship manufacturers generally prefer st 37 quality steel, which we call the keel of the ship. Since these parts do not meet sea water, it is not necessary to use shipbuilding plate here. Ship plates are very similar in chemical composition to commercial grade steels. When we compare the chemical components of the st 37 quality sheet in the chemical components of A grade shipbuilding sheet, the carbon ratio in the chemical composition of the A grade ship sheet is around 0.21, and the Manganese value is higher in ship sheets compared to commercial quality sheets.

As you can see in the table below, there are A grade ship sheet chemical components.

As can be seen in the chemical component table of ship plates, the main qualities are defined as A GRADE, B GRADE, C GRADE, D GRADE AND E GRADE. When we look at the chemical structure of ship sheets, we notice the difference in manganese value. We know that the oxidation times of ship sheets are longer than st 37 quality sheets, which differ from commercial quality sheets in terms of structure. One of the only reasons for shipbuilding shipyards to use shipbuilding sheets is the durability period. Ship construction steels are subjected to surface cleaning and painting processes before ship assembly. This process is also called sheet metal sandblast painting. In sheet metal sandblasting painting processes, steel balls are used to ensure surface cleaning and smoothness, and after the surface cleaning with steel balls, the epoxy paint process, which is called as primer paint, is applied. After the sandblasting and painting processes, the life of the steel material becomes longer. Prolonging the life of steel means slowing down the oxidation process. It does not differ in terms of steel strength. Another method of extending the life of steel is by galvanizing. However, since the galvanizing method is compared to the cost of sandblasting painting, shipbuilders prefer the sandblasting painting process because there is a very serious difference.

Also, ship sheet metal grades are named differently according to European steel standards.
